Have you been able to incorporate your previous experience in [jobs/education] in your writing?

Absolutely. I worked as an Optometrist, an Astronomer and an experimental physicist. I have several ideas for Sci-Fi stories that lean on my experience as a research scientist. But it was when I was working with people on a daily basis as an Optician that I really learned the important parts of what it takes to write a novel. Many extraordinary characters I met in the testing room have worked their way into my stories!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?

Yes! I am mostly bedbound due to poor health. I usually write in my head, and redraft until I'm happy with a passage. Then I voice record what I've written, and use transcription software to type the first draft.

Have you ever experienced writer’s block? How did you deal with it?

All the time. I try not to force it. I just indulge my other hobbies, and then wait for the ideas to come to me, usually when I'm drifting off to sleep or resting.

What other hobbies do you have outside of writing?

My main hobbies are drawing and playing online chess. My mood is usually dictated by my last chess result.

Do you have any personal connection to the story or characters?

My current book, 'Captain Toe Beard,' is a children's book that I wrote with my six-year-old boy, Ronan. We came up with the idea together. So I guess you could ay that's a deep personal connection.
