How did you become an author and get published? Share your experience.
I am a debut author in my early 60s. I began my writing career as a lifestyle journalist with Bombay Times and Bangalore Times in India. After moving to Canada in 2003, I freelanced for online magazines and gained diverse experience working as a customer service representative in restaurants and retail, as well as a photo studio assistant at Amazon.
A lay off from a telecom company few years ago set the ball rolling for pursuing this desire to become an author. I started working on a draft created many year back and in about 8 months was holding a manuscript.
My literary agent recommended a vanity publisher and I said okay because I am an an unknown author and was keen on putting my book in the hands of potential readers.
My book, Butterflies of Success was released in September.
Do you identify with your main character or did you create a character that is your opposite?
I would like to believe I identify with most of my characters. It is like this, I borrowed different traits from my personality and created protagonists for my debut novel.
Have you ever experienced writer’s block? How did you deal with it?
Oh yes, many times. The best possible way to deal with it is to start reading the chapters, or paragraphs and not digress from the job in hand.
Browsing for inspirations led to many hours of procrastinations. I learned this very soon. Taking a walk, even washing my face and general sprucing up helped me to get out of the writer's block.
Organising my desk helped as well.
How long did it take you to write this book?
As mentioned earlier, I picked a draft saved from many years, and working on it took me around 8 months. It included going working and reworking on at least 4 drafts, followed by editing, and then the manuscript.
Are any of the characters in your book based on people in your real life? If so, can you tell us more about that process and how it influenced your writing?
No, they are all fictional.
